Wendell Andrews, 96, of Tea and formerly of Miller, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in Lennox, surrounded by his family.
A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church, Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial will follow at G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller.
Wendell was born January 25, 1918 at Waterloo, Nebraska to Rev. Joseph and Wilhelmina (Timmerman) Andrews; the youngest of five children. The family moved to Miller in the early 1920’s. Wendell grew up in the house next to the Presbyterian Church where his father was the pastor. He graduated from Miller High School in 1936 and later graduated from S.D.S.U. with a Civil Engineering degree.
In 1940, he joined the United States Marine Corp. He was commissioned 2nd lieutenant and was sent to Iceland. When the United States entered WWII, he served as a Captain and then as a Major in the Pacific theater. He retired from the Marine corp with an honorable discharge in 1946. On June 13, 1942, Wendell married Harriet Alice Allen in San Diego, California. Their son Gregory Wayne was born in 1948 and their daughter Barbara Jo was born in 1950.
He worked for Armco Steel in Huron and later in Minneapolis, MN. The family returned to Miller in the 1950’s when Wendell bought the Farm and Home Supply Hardware Store and Firestone Tire Dealership with his brother Ralph. In 1967-1968, he and Ralph sold the hardware store and Wendell moved his family to Pierre where he worked at the highway department as a hydraulic engineer, roadside development engineer and grading plus engineer. At the age of 63, he retired.
Wendell was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Miller where he served as an usher, deacon and church elder. He joined the Masonic Lodge, becoming a 50 year member in 2014. All his life he loved to fish for walleye, go pheasant hunting and watch sports. After retirement, he especially loved to share these activities with his grandson.
In 2005, Wendell and Harriet moved to Tea, SD to be near his daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Joel Paulson.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet of Lennox; children: Gregory Andrews and Barbara (Joel) Paulson; grandchildren: Dr. Drew (Dr. Kristine) Paulson; great grandchildren: Bruce, Axel and Brix Paulson; nieces: Janet (Pat) Saulsbury and Lynne (Tom) Plymesser; and nephew, Wendell Andrews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Joseph and Wilhelmina Andrews; sisters: Leona (Harold) Schroeder and Ruth (Bill) Goudie; brothers: Ralph and Loren Andrews; and niece, Andrea Goudie.
