Bertha Ruzicka, 96, of Miller, passed away Monday, March 9, 2015 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital, Miller.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 14, 2015 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller, with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Miller. A rosary service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2014 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller.
Bert was born at home in Harrison Township, Hand County, South Dakota on December 5, 1918. She was one of six children. Her parents were Anna (Vopat) and Edward Schmidt of Harrison Township, South Dakota. Bert married Joe Ruzicka on November 27, 1945 at St. Ann’s Church in Miller, South Dakota. Bert lived in Miller her entire adult life.
Bert was educated in country schools in Hand County. She was a member of St. Ann’s parish and served on the Altar Society. Joe and Bert loved to travel and traveled throughout the United States and Canada in their Airstream. Bert enjoyed cooking and was an avid gardener. She always had great garden tomatoes and beautiful houseplants.
Bert is survived by her three children: Jim Ruzicka and his wife Peer Kling of Sandia Park, New Mexico, Patty Ruzicka of Louisville, Kentucky, and Jerry and his wife Cathy Ruzicka of Lake City, Florida; three grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Her nieces and nephews held a special place in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents Anna Vopat Schmidt and Edward Schmidt; her siblings: Joe Schmidt, Ben Schmidt, Marie Bullard, Francis Schmidt, and Paul Schmidt; and her husband, Joe Ruzicka.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful professionals at Highmore Health and Courtyard Villa who made her final years happy and safe. A special thanks goes to Marcia and husband Loren Stulken, Bob and Glenda Leisinger and Dennis Ruzicka for all their love and support.
