David Ames, 83, of Miller, passed away Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital, Miller.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 3, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, Miller with Pastors Mark Johnsen and David Andrews officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, April 2, 2015 followed by a 5:00 p.m. prayer service, all at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.
David Ames was born Aug. 27, 1931 to Charles and Sarah (Cox) Ames on the family farm near Tulare. He grew up on various farms in Hand County, settling on what would be the family farm in elementary school. He attended Miller High School. He served in the Air Force from 1951-55, then came back to work on the family farm. He married Delores “Pete” Pederson Feb. 28, 1958. They made their home on the farm until moving into Miller in 1994. He continued to farm for several years.
He was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of Greenleaf United Methodist Church until its closing in 2012, then joined the Miller United Methodist Church. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Lions Club, United Methodist Men and served on the Florence Township board for many years. He enjoyed working on and driving old cars, watching NASCAR racing, playing cards with friends and visiting with the coffee crowd at the Ranch Cafe.
Survivors include his wife, four daughters, Peggy Ames, Huron; LeAnn and John Suhr, Webster; Theresa and Ken Martinmaas, Clear Lake; Ellen and Kevin Logan, Gettysburg; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Baruth, Woonsocket and Sarah “Sally” Schatz, Tripp; and one brother, Steven “Bud” Ames, St. Lawrence; sisters-in-law Edna Ames, Miller and Norma Ames, Longmont CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, William Ames; two sisters, Edna Ames and Ruth Jaragoske; and four brothers, Wesley, Donald, Robert and Kenneth Ames.
