Doris D. Jones, 99, of Miller, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 21, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church, Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial will follow at G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., Friday, October 21, 2016 at the church.
Doris Dale was born January 13, 1917, on a farm south of Vayland, South Dakota, to Peter and Gertrude (Borkhuis) Olson. She went to elementary school in Vayland where she graduated 8th grade. She went on to Wessington High School and graduated from there in 1934. She spent her entire 99 years in Hand County; working at the Hand County Courthouse, Hand County Bank, and Jones Drug. She married Mack Jones on Christmas Day in 1940. Together they raised two children, Greg and Susan.
Doris was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she directed the children’s Sunday School Program for many years, was a deacon, and sang in the choir for over fifty years. She was very active in the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, did other community volunteer work and at one time received the Volunteer of the Year Award. She also was active in the Eastern Star and P.E.O. Chapter AK, where she was honored as a 65-year member in 2014.
Her memory will be cherished by her children: Greg (Sally) Jones of Crystal, MN and Susan Jones of Miller; two grandchildren: Brooke Amanda (Kris) Betker of New Hope, MN and Nicholas Jones of Maple Grove, MN; nieces and nephews: Janice Palmer, Jim Jones, and Brian Jones, all of Miller; Jan Pappone of Hugo, MN, Kris Jones of Salt Lake City, UT, and Herb Jones of Yankton; and first cousins: Avis Chipman, Amy Garman, Quentin Oleson, and Ormelyn Boetell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mack; and sister, Florence.
