Leo Joseph Grunewaldt

Leo Joseph Grunewaldt, 97, of Faulkton, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at the Faulkton Area Medical Center.

Funeral Mass was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 7, 2017, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Faulkton, with Fr. Christopher Hughes officiating. A wake service was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 6, 2017 at the church, with visitation one-hour prior.

Leo Joseph Grunewaldt was born April 18, 1919 in Woonsocket, SD to August and Minnie (Zapp) Grunewaldt. He attended schools in Loyalton, SD until graduating from Faulkton High School. He married Mary Brown April 9, 1944.

Leo was a lifelong farmer and rancher who especially enjoyed Hereford cattle, John Deere tractors, and a good corn crop. He was an active member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Orient, SD, serving many years on the Parish Council and as an usher.

Leo’s life will be cherished by his wife, Mary of Faulkton; brother, Lawrence of Faulkton; his  children: Kathy Sarutzki of Sioux Falls, David (Doris) Grunewaldt of Ashton, Michael (Nancy) Grunewaldt of Miranda, Lorraine (Michael) Fernandes of San Ramon, CA, and Lois (Tim) Tankersley of Gordon, NE; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James; and son in law, Bob Sarutzki.

The family wishes to acknowledge the love and excellent care given to Leo in his last few years by the staff of The Meadows and Faulkton Area Medical Center.
