Howard Evans

Howard Evans, 82, of Miller, died Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket, SD following a battle with cancer.

Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Reck Funeral Home, Miller with Father Paul Josten officiating. A light lunch will follow the service at the funeral home.

Howard Lavern Evans was born August 5, 1935 to Arthur and Fairy (Almond) Evans on the farm south of St. Lawrence. He grew up on that farm and was educated in the St. Lawrence and rural school systems.

He grew up helping with farm chores alongside his brother and sisters and often spoke of hauling bales in the hot summer sun and riding horses with his sister Connie. He loved the old country music and he and his brother played guitar and sang.

On February 7, 1959, he was united in marriage to Yvonne Schaefers in Polo. They were blessed with seven children. They started their family life on a farm near Polo, later moving to Miller where they lived until his death.

Howard loved dirt track car racing and never missed a race at Miller or Huron until he became too ill.

Survivors include his wife Yvonne of 59 years; children: David (Val) Evans of Cape Coral, FL, Anita Baker of Sioux Falls, SD, Mike Evans of Huron, SD, Gary Evans of Aberdeen, SD, Kevin(Duron) Evans of Gilbert, AZ, Colleen (Blair) Scoular of Aberdeen, SD, and Terry Evans of Miller, SD; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joyce Wieseler of Polo, SD; and brothers-in law: Duane Schaefers of Cavour, SD and Gerald Schaefers of Piedmont, SD.

Preceding Howard in death were his parents; two brothers: Richard and Maurice; and four sisters: Verlyn Miller, Beryle Baysinger, Helen Younkin, and Connie Edelman.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Howard’s arrangements.
