Milton Everett Schmidt was born June 3, 1929 in Rockham, SD to Fred and Elsie “Avis” (Pierce) Schmidt. He grew up and attended school in the Rockham area. Milton married Dorothea Stapp on March 12, 1947. To this union, five children, Gary, Greg, Grant, Gwen, and Cindy, were born. Together, Milton and Dorothea lived and farmed in Lynn Township in Hand County until they moved to the Eastern Star Apartments in April of 2010.
Milton will be remembered as an honest and hardworking man. He was a very loving and caring father and husband, shown, as his children recall, in his stern parenting style. Milton was a sports fanatic, a fisherman, and an avid traveler. He bowled, golfed, and played softball himself, and loved watching other teams compete in any kind of athletics. He always sat behind the bench, cheering on the Northern State Wolves Basketball Team. In his later years, Milton loved playing cards and being a jokester. He played lighthearted pranks and gave the wonderful staff at the Eastern Star Home a hard time.
Milton is survived by five children: Gary Schmidt of Rockham, Greg (Linda) Schmidt of Coeur d’ Alene, ID, Grant (Donna) Schmidt of Redfield, Gwen (Randy) Johnson of Miller, SD, and Cindy (Bob) Nuhsbaumer of Zell, SD. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
Milton was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea, in 2010, his brother Fred Schmidt; his sisters, Argie Joyce, Elaine Lingscheit, and Marlene Bottum; and one great-grandson, Dakota Everett Schmidt.
